DCMS Multi-sport grassroots facilities programme

The multi-sport grassroots facilities programme is investing funding to level up facilities across the UK, including in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Overview

The multi-sport grassroots facilities programme is investing funding to level up facilities across the UK, including in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This UK-wide programme provides funding to make essential facility and pitch improvements, so that these communities have a high-quality pitch to play on, and is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to levelling up all corners of the United Kingdom. A mixture of projects have been selected as part of the 2021/22 programme, for their ability to deliver improved facilities in deprived areas, support multi-sport use and increase participation among currently under-represented groups — this focuses primarily on women and girls, disabled players and those in deprived areas.

Successful projects

Following the announcement of £25m at Spring Budget 2021, projects which have benefited from funding in 2021/22 can now be confirmed

The Football Associations are delivering this year’s programme in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Football Foundation is the delivery partner in England.

England

£39m of government funding has supported 117 projects across England in 2021/22 - this is made up of £18m existing government commitment to grassroots sports, and a further £21m from the Chancellor’s Spring Budget 2021. Partnered with funding from the FA and Premier League, this investment will directly benefit communities up and down the country. These locally-led projects are helping to make the Local Football Football Facility Plans a reality, and to take us one step closer to delivering the pitches every community needs.

The projects cover a wide range of interventions, from artificial pitch provision to changing room improvements, depending on community needs.

Scotland

In Scotland, the investment is targeted at critical 3G pitch replacement and is being delivered by the Scottish FA. Eighteen projects across Scotland are set to benefit from this £2m investment, helping communities maintain decent pitches for community use.

Wales

In Wales, projects are delivering a range of improvements to grassroots facilities, including developing better changing facilities for women and players with disabilities. Seventeen projects will receive a share of the £1.3m allocated.

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, £700k is being distributed to make vital improvements to grassroots facilities, for example through better maintenance and upgraded disabled access. Twenty-six projects will receive funding.
