All VAT registered businesses should now be signed up for Making Tax Digital for VAT.
You must now use compatible software to keep your VAT records and file your VAT Returns.
To do this, you’ll need either:
- a compatible software package that allows you to keep digital records and submit VAT Returns
- bridging software to connect non-compatible software (like spreadsheets) to HMRC systems
If you use an agent or accountant, talk to them about what software you need.
Watch a video about getting compatible software.
Search for software
Use this service to search for record keeping software and bridging software.
After you’ve got the right software
If you’re a business, you should start keeping your VAT records and submitting your VAT Returns using software.
If you’re an agent signing up a client’s business create an agent services account — this is different to your HMRC online services for agents account.
How to use the feature
If your software is compatible, it will ask you to grant authority to access the data from HMRC on your behalf. The authority lasts for 18 months, but you can check or withdraw your permissions at any time.
Software issues
You should contact your software provider if you’re:
- unsure how to enter information into your software
- having issues with your software
HMRC can only provide advice on the legal requirements of Making Tax Digital.
