Government Operational Research Service - Badging Process

Details of eligibility requirements and the application process for badging, the route by which existing civil servants in analytical roles can join GORS.

Who this is for

GORS badging is for existing Civil Servants already working in government in roles involving Operational Research (OR) or OR-related activities. This includes people working in analytical roles that are not within a wider analytical team. By going through the process, you can become a member of the GORS profession without having to change your day-to-day role.

Badging also links to the cross-government programme to help everyone find their professional home in the Civil Service.

If you are not an existing permanent Civil Servant, or not currently working in an analytical role, please visit Working for GORS to explore other entry routes, through which you can be offered a GORS post if successful.

What GORS badging is

GORS badging is the formal recognition of your capability as an Operational Research professional in government. It demonstrates your skills, expertise, and credibility while also connecting you with a network of colleagues who share your passion for analysis and problem-solving.

Why apply?

Whether your aim is to accelerate your career, broaden your professional network, or work on some of the most challenging problems facing the UK, GORS badging can support your ambitions and open up opportunities across government.

Being GORS-badged gives you professional recognition that is respected across government and valued in recruitment and career progression. It can strengthen your prospects for career advancement by making you eligible for a wider range of jobs, and providing a recognised credential that sets you apart when applying for roles or promotions.

The process also opens doors to development opportunities, including specialist training and workshops designed to enhance both your technical and professional abilities. By joining the GORS network, you will be able to connect with analysts from across government who are tackling some of the country’s most important challenges. You will also have access to exclusive resources, events, and a community that hosts regular networking and social activities throughout the year.

Eligibility

You can apply for GORS badging if:

  • you are a permanent Civil Servant
  • you hold either a 2:1 degree in a numerate subject, or a 2:2 numerate degree with relevant work experience or a postgraduate qualification

If you do not meet the degree requirements, you can still apply by providing evidence of equivalent numeracy through work or study, along with a supporting statement from your line management chain or your department’s GORS Head of Profession if there are no GORS members within your management chain.

If you already hold another professional badge, you can still be considered for GORS badging, including the option of dual badging across more than one profession.

Application process

To apply, you will first need to complete an application form. Your submission will then go through a sift stage where it is assessed against the eligibility criteria.

If you pass the sift you will be invited to take part in a technical interview based on the GORS Technical Framework. This will also likely include either a Problem Structuring Test (where you formulate an approach to a problem, followed by a short presentation and questions) or a presentation on your analytical work.

How to get started

If you meet the eligibility requirements and are interested in applying, or have any questions, you can contact your department’s GORS Head of Profession (or contact gors.recruitment@hmrc.gov.uk to be directed to them) for more information.
