On 19 March 2026, the government published Northern Growth Strategy: Next Steps, which sets out the government’s next steps in delivering the Northern Growth Strategy and the actions being taken now to support growth and investment across the North. This document builds on Northern Growth Strategy: Case for Change (published 14 January 2026) and outlines the government’s next steps in its plan to drive growth across the North. These next steps have been developed together with Mayors and local leaders through a renewed partnership approach.
The document sets out some key questions the government will explore with a wide range of stakeholders over the summer. To support this, an invitation for views was launched alongside the document, inviting views to the questions it sets out. The invitation for views can be accessed at: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/NorthernGrowthViews/. It will close on 31 July 2026.
The government will review responses with partners over the summer to strengthen the approach ahead of a further update in the autumn.
A stronger northern economy is an essential part of the government’s national growth plan. This document lays the foundations for stronger growth across the North, beginning with historic investment in northern rail infrastructure through a commitment to deliver Northern Powerhouse Rail.
