At Autumn Budget 2025, the government announced the introduction of electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED), a new mileage-based charge for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which will take effect from April 2028.

The government launched a consultation on eVED, which set out further details on how eVED would work and sought views on its design and implementation. The consultation ran from 26 November until 18 March 2026 and received over 5,000 responses.
